Why Join
People become ASU members to have a voice in their workplace and industry and to use this voice to protect and improve their employment conditions.
Without a union, employees have little bargaining power to protect their conditions. A union means having access to advice and representation, so you know what your rights are, and then sticking together with your fellow employees to secure a better working life.
Australian Bureau of Statistics date shows time and again that unionised workers are better off than their non-union counterparts.
The benefits of union membership are even greater for part-time, casual, women and teenage workers. On average, union members earn an extra $156 more per week than non-union members.According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics:
- full-time employees who are union members earn an average of 11.81% or $83 per week more than non-union members
- part-time employees who are union members earn an average of 46.22% or $159 per week more than non-union members
- women union members average of 29.93% or $175 per week more than women who are not union members
- casual union members earn 16.2% or $64 per week more than non-members
- 15 to 19-year-olds who are union members earn 20.2%, or $40 per week more than non-members.
ASU members have won many of the conditions of your employment. Some things taken for granted that were won by union members include annual leave, sick leave, parental leave, superannuation and lunch breaks. Conditions hard fought for by past members need to be maintained, enforced and furthered by current and future members.
