Radio Contacts and Tips

 

Make sure you are clear about the points (keypoints) you want to make before you call. Write yourself a few notes and keep them close by.

The media love speaking to "real people" like you - so don't be scared. They'll generally save any really tough questions for the officials of the union. If you are asked a question you don't know how to answer, don't be afraid to say so. You're a telephone professional, so use your skills and training. Speak clearly - not too fast and not too slow - and keep a pleasant, friendly manner about you.

Avoid using jargon - like EBAs, AWAs, AIRCs etc. Most people won't have a clue what you're on about.

Don't get into an argument. Never become defensive or angry. Much better to 'agree to disagree' and end the call if it does turn nasty.
