Changes to Arrivals and Departures
Management have advised they intend to continue cost cutting at Brisbane Airport, this time it is going to be cuts to numbers of staff at arrivals and departures – down to one! This will initially take the form of a trial between 30 November and 7 December 2005, and this is to be reviewed after this date to see if the new system works. The ASU insisted management detail procedures for the individuals responsible for meeting aircraft in the event they require assistance during the trial period.
What are the concerns?
The ASU is concerned that further cuts in Customer Services will result in increased stress levels as frustrated passengers, including special assists and unaccompanied minors, wait for assistance. We are concerned about the likelihood of increased Ground Rage as passengers tend to vent their frustration on our members. There are a number of possible workplace health and safety implications under the new system. Members should not try and handle multiple wheelchair passengers or in excess of four unaccompanied minors.
Are you working hard enough?
So, Qantas has made record profits, yet again, and you are having to make further cuts to increase profit. Come 6 December, Brisbane Airport will have lost 35 positions – how much more should you have to take?
Tell us what you think of the new system?
We need you to let the Union know of any problems you experience during the trial. This information is only for the Union office, it will be treated confidentially and will not be used without your permission. We ask you to provide your name and contact details so we can get in touch with you for clarification of your issues if required. Please give us the details of your experience during the trial and either hand to a Delegate or fax back to the ASU office on 07 3252 1208.
