ASU Delegates and Organiser Jo Justo met Tuesday 2 December 2003 with Qantas management to discuss the latest submission for the increase to establishment figures.
Qantas submitted a plan to Sydney some time ago to approve rosters to meet the new schedule and to increase full time and part time positions at both terminals. The plan also included secondments from the city and temporary employees.
Delegates expressed their appreciation to Qantas Brisbane for upholding the agreement reached at the commencement of the Accelerated Leave Program that the next time a submission would be made to Sydney, full time numbers would be the focus.
The submission has been accepted by Sydney and the meeting was called to seek approval from the ASU for temporary employees to be engaged.
The ASU said no.
Delegates expressed the view of members that people were working to their capacity and were extremely tired, but under no circumstances are you prepared to accept a return to the engagement of temporary employees.
The position put to management was that Delegates would review the submitted roster alongside the numbers of new positions that were presented, and we would consider their request. Qantas have suggested that if the ASU were to approve the reinstatement of a temporary employee agreement, the buffer of 10 part time conversions (still in dispute) would be removed.
Again, the ASU has said no, and until we examine the submission, we are not in a position to agree.
ASU Delegates will be holding a series of meetings over the coming weeks. Please ensure you attend these meetings to receive the latest information on the temps, the low cost airline and other matters. See your ASU Delegates if you need more information.
Your ASU Delegates for both the International and Domestic Terminals are:
