Working to Live - Bulletin 9

Despite adopting as their own most of the ASU's proposals to assist Qantas Group employees to balance life and work Qantas has rejected most of our other claims which were designed to ensure the economic and job security of members.

The ASU negotiating team met Qantas on 24 August 2004 to hear the first of the responses from Qantas to our claims. You can find an in depth summary of our claims in the Related Documents section at the bottom of this news item.

SPGs & QFIT discussions continue

ASU representatives on the negotiating committee met with Qantas on 20 August 2004 to discuss some of the specific issues for SPGs and QFIT staff.

In particular we raised our concerns that the packages for these staff do not stack up against market rates. Qantas denies this. If you are a QFIT or SPG employee and have evidence about the market rates for your job, email us on airlines@asu.asn.au.

Pick the profit competition winners

Before the Qantas group announcement of the profit, we ran a competition for financial members of the ASU across the Group to guess the likely profit before tax.

Although no one guessed the exact amount of the all time record profit of $964.6million the closest guesses are the winners.

We have three winners:

  • Anthony Edwards - Cairns Airport
  • Fiona Anderson - Hobart Telesales
  • L. Tay-Nagel - Adelaide Airport

Congratulations to our winners who will shortly receive an ASU t-shirt of their choice and two free movie tickets.

What's next?

The ASU is currently conducting meetings of members across Qantas to discuss the company's response to our claims and to consider our response to the company's claims for changes to part time, casual, fixed term employee conditions and the changes to RDOs and the Perth Airport 12 hour break.

Our next negotiation meeting with the company is scheduled for 9 September 2004 and we expect further responses to our claims from Qantas at that time.
