The Australian Services Union will urge Qantas shareholders to vote against a proposal to increase directors' fees by more than 66 per cent at the company's Annual General Meeting in Brisbane tomorrow.

ASU Assistant National Secretary Linda White said the pay increase for Qantas directors was excessive, particularly when compared with proposed pay increases of just 3 per cent per annum for Qantas workers.

We think it is incredibly unfair that the Qantas directors can propose a 66 per cent increase for themselves at a time when our members are being told they are only worth a 3 per cent pay rise, Ms White said.

Qantas employees are working incredibly hard, but don't seem to be valued by Qantas despite their contribution to a record pre-tax profit of nearly $1 billion this year, she said.

Ms White said the excessive fee increase for directors was in addition to a 36 per cent increase in their fees just two years ago.

Qantas directors are already paid well above the average of other directors at ASX Top 100 Companies, and we don't believe a further 66 per cent increase is in the interests of shareholders or good corporate governance, she said.

Many of our members at Qantas are also shareholders themselves and will be attending the meeting to raise their concerns about this excessive proposal, she said.

Ms White said the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors supported the union's objections to the excessive fee increase, and that they had advised their 32 industry and public sector superannuation fund clients to vote against the proposal at tomorrow's Annual General Meeting.

We are also urging shareholder to join us in opposing a resolution increasing the share bonus available to Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon and CFO Peter Gregg, Ms White said.

The ASU is the largest union in the Australian aviation industry, and represents around one third of workers in the Qantas Group.
