Roster Changes Underway
On the 16th of January 2008, the Roster Committee reconvened to discuss outstanding rostering issues and to commence consultation on the Northern Summer Roster. Your Roster Committee Representatives were pleased with the progress made in the meeting and the spirit of cooperation from management.
Your ASU Delegates raised concerns about late finishes into days off and queried the requirement for a Departure A roster and the allocation of weekend work to part time employees. Management acknowledged that with the implementation of the Northern Summer Roster only 8 weeks away that not all roster concerns could be investigated and altered in time; however management have agreed to review our previously proposed rosters that eliminate late finishes into days off as a matter of urgency. Acting Customer Service Manager, Lyn Preston, will be discussing with the ASU the Departure A roster and will continue to communicate over the matter of weekend work allocated to part time employees.
Further meetings will be held in the upcoming weeks to ensure that these matters are addressed to ensure that the Northern Summer Roster is introduced without further disputation.
Through the hard work of Baggage Representatives, management have agreed to implement necessary changes to the Baggage department rosters to ensure sociability, family friendly shifts, consistent shifts and to provide days off that are not utilised to catch-up on sleep. An additional line on the roster has also been requested which is under discussion with management. We take this opportunity to recognise Baggage Representatives and their continual efforts over the past four months. Well Done!
More vacancies on the way
Qantas management have advised the ASU that additional jobs will be advertised and filled in the near future. The ASU informed management that over the past 16 months a number of long serving and highly experienced employees had resigned from Qantas. It is the position of the ASU that these employees should have the right to apply for vacancies if interested. Management responded that employees could apply and the normal selection process would apply in which experience is considered.
Baggage burdens on the Agenda
As you may be aware, over the 12 months the Baggage Department has been inundated with bags and the workload has drastically increased. Customer Service Agents at check-in have also been in the forefront of abuse from passengers when bags cannot be loaded onto flights or they are not available at their time of arrival. Additionally, it has been noted by the ASU that procedures in place at the Ramp are not consistent with customer service procedures and the required time frames.
The ASU has been informed that Mr John Borghetti has confirmed that a special project team will be established to investigate, research and address the issues in relation to baggage and the current procedures in place. We encourage all ASU members to raise their concerns regarding baggage with their ASU delegates to ensure that these matters are attended to.
Excel Award Granted x 2
On an annual basis the excel award is granted to an employee who has gone beyond the expectation and provided outstanding service. The ASU is pleased to announce that this year two employees have received the award. Congratulations to Yasmin Lee for her outstanding efforts.
Morale Team
Over the past twelve months ASU members have lobbied Qantas management to establish a committee to address issues such as stress, workplace morale and rapport with management. The committee will address issues such as long term morale and will aim to improve time spent at work. The ASU strongly encourages members to actively participate on the committee. Please forward your expression of interest to either Ian Hope or Di Pelecanous.
